iso is often described as sensitivity
but that is not quite accurate
especially with digital cameras
it does not change how much light enters the camera
that is controlled by shutter speed and aperture
iso acts after the light is recorded
amplification
when light hits the sensor it creates a signal
at low iso the signal is used as it is
clean
stable
at higher iso the signal is amplified
the image becomes brighter
but imperfections are amplified as well
this appears as noise
what changes
iso does not increase light
it increases the visibility of what was captured
the image brightens
detail does not increase
noise becomes more apparent
the trade off
low iso produces a cleaner image
high iso produces a brighter image
but that brightness comes at a cost
noise increases
clarity can decrease
the photograph becomes less precise
where iso sits
iso is not the first control
it is what remains when the others reach their limits
when the shutter cannot go slower
when the aperture cannot open wider
iso becomes the adjustment
the key shift
before changing iso look at the light
is there enough of it
can you change the shutter
can you change the aperture
if not
then iso becomes necessary
what iso is
iso is not about gathering light
it is about strengthening the signal
sometimes that is required
sometimes it is not
the difference is in the light
iso does not change the light
it changes how the camera responds to it
iso does not stand alone
it completes the system
