light over megapixels

film to megapixels

people compare film to digital in megapixels

it sounds precise

but it misses the point

rough film to digital equivalents

35mm film
around 12 to 24 mp

fine grain film with a good scan
around 30 to 40 mp

high end drum scan
up to 50 mp

medium format film
around 50 to 100 mp

large format film 4×5 inch
around 150 to 300 mp

why estimates vary

film resolution is not fixed

it depends on the film the lens and the scan

some films resolve fine detail
others show more grain and less usable detail

lower iso film resolves more detail
higher iso film shows more grain and less detail

a well scanned 35mm negative often contains around 20 to 24 mp of real detail

this is why 20 mp digital cameras are often compared to 35mm film

not because they are identical

but because they resolve a similar level of detail

the look however is different

why the numbers fall short

megapixels measure detail

they do not measure character

they do not describe grain
they do not explain edge transitions
they do not tell you how an image feels

why film looks different

digital uses a fixed grid of pixels

film uses a random pattern of grain

digital noise feels structured

film grain feels irregular

edges are different too

digital defines them precisely

film transitions are softer

less exact
more gradual

why film can feel more dimensional

film often feels more dimensional

this comes from

grain structure
lens rendering
gentler transitions

together they reduce harshness at the edges of forms

the image feels less brittle
less clinical
more alive

colour

film records colour through layers of emulsion

each film stock responds differently

digital uses a fixed array of colour filters

it aims for consistency

film often produces more distinctive palettes
and subtler blending

digital often looks cleaner
but sometimes less characterful

what matters

resolution tells you how much is there

rendering decides what it feels like

film cannot be reduced to a megapixel number

learn to see that difference

and everything changes
